Use everything from paper doilies to ice-cream filled tiny flowerpots. And forget the thermometer. You know it's just a bug."

Jani says, "Dig into your recipe books for delightful pastry goodies. He'll love you for it, and besides, it make the whole house smell homey."

Jani says, "Pin a carnation in his lapel unbeknownst to him. Carnations are the special flower for March."

Jani says, "Paint his name on a long silk scarf the way chic designers sign their names to their scarves, buttons and so on."

Jani says, "Find out more about his day. (Careful, don't bug him.) Just ask once."

Jani says, "Tell him (by wire) that he is your perfect example of serendipity. Maybe he'll have to look it up, too."

Jani says, "Pick your own Easter outfit and don't mention it."

Jani says, "Color and decorate Easter eggs with hearts and cupids a la February 14th. If he's confused, tell him that for you two, each day is Valentine's Day."

A Tisket, A Tasket...

Jani says, "Start collecting Easter basket goodies, like old-fashioned Easter cards from your local antique shop and the little bitty jelly beans that are so hard to find etc."

Jani says, "Round up all the data the IRS might suspect you of controlling as a close associate of his: restaurant, department store, and gasoline slips, medical statements, canceled checks, etc. All of the paper work you've been putting in the bottom left drawer of the sewing chest..."

Surprise!

Jani says, "Surprise him. Have the car serviced for Spring. Make sure have the snow tires removed. (You may be in the dog house if there's a late-blooming snow storm, but it seems safe now.)

Jani says, "Pick out a Summer set of shorts for him: March can get to be a drag."

Spring With a Fling!

Jani says, "Buy him an interesting tie to start off Spring with a fling."

Jani says, "Get him the current hardcover book on his favorite hobby."

Springtime Drive

Jani says, "Get him in the car and take him on a 'delightful Springtime ride because you love him' ".

St Patrick's Day

Jani says, "Send him a St. Patty's Day card."

In Memory of Strauss...

Jani says, " Get him to take you dancing somewhere so that you can waltz to commerate Johann Strauss's birthday, which is this month."

Decoupage

Jani says, "Make a decoupage of his first love note to you. It's not such an involved thing. This art of decorating with paper cutouts starts with a small can of white shellac and a small can of orange shellac, some Elmer's glue, a rasp (a funny name for a big file), some Krylon Clear Spray, and some steel wool. (And don't have him bring home the stuff!)

"Take any old piece of wood big enough to paste you love letter on. Now, with a hammer, or anything mace-like, beat on the poor piece of wood. Then round off the edges. Now paste on the letter with Elmer's and, when dry, spray with Krylon. When this is dry, sand smooth with steel wool till the letter looks like part of the wood itself. Then brush with two parts white and one part orange shellac. Add more coats until the desired antique-y affect is achieved. Burn the edges all around with a candle. Add a chain and you can hang it up in his closet. (If this is all just too puzzling, try your library for Complete Book of Decoupage by Frances Wing.)"

I Don't Know About Flair...

Jani says, "Plan a surprise party for his birthday, complete with personal local-joke gifts from close friends. Maybe you could stage the party on a new construction site or closed expressway exit-anywhere with flair."

Frequent Love Correspondence

Jani says, "The birthstone for March is aquamarine. In case his birthday falls in March, look for a letter opener with an aquamarine handle-handy when he opens your frequent love correspondence."

Jani says, "Pack him a mounds bar for his ride to work, just in case he gets that indescribable irresistible urge."

Jani says, "Bring your photo on his desk up to date."

Jani says, "Pick up some current boat catalogs. If his hobby is not in the nautical catagory, try strewing around some exotic travel brochures. "

Jani says, "On a Sunday when you don't think he'll be racing somewhere in the Volkswagen-fill it up with multicolor balloons."

Think Warm

Jani says, "Hang up a bikini in his bathroom."

Well, maybe not a bikini but surely there is some fun way to evoke sweets thoughts of upcoming warm vacations while we wait out the last of the chilly temps.

A German "I Love You"

Jani says, "Say 'Ich Liebe Dich' and make him Saurbraten with gingersnap gravy. You'll probably be able to find a recipe for Saurbraten in any standard cookbook, but the gingersnap gravy-that may pose a problem. Here's the recipe:
2 cups marinade from Saurbraten
1/2 cup cold water
2 tablespoons flour
2 teaspoons sugar
10 gingersnaps
Remove meat and vegetables from pot to platter and keep warm. Pour off the marinade until you've got two cups. Add 10 crumbled gingersnaps to marinade. Mix and shake flour and water and sugar together in a gravy shaker. Make sure you have a smooth mixture. Stir slowly into the hot broth. Bring to a boil. Boil one minute. Season to taste and serve. Potato pancakes would be fun with this dish."

Jani says, "Call him up and tell him you're ecstatic about Bell inventing the telephone 'cause it's so easy for you two to keep in touch this way. Bell's birthday is in March."

Jani says, "Put a daffodil in a bud vase for his breakfast surprise. It's the flower of the month."
